Why curing matters

Do not use the mat for any purpose until it has been cured.

An uncured mat has not yet reached its proper impact protection. Using it before curing is complete could result in severe injury or death to the user, and may cause permanent damage to the mat.

Curing must be completed before any use or cleaning, and the process must be started within 21 days of the date you receive the mat. Failure to follow all curing instructions will void your warranty.

Before you begin
  • The room must be well-ventilated and the floors must be properly cured. (See Receiving Your New Classic Mat for flooring that a new mat must never touch.)
  • The mat must have been at 60°F or higher for at least 24 hours before unrolling.
  • Do not remove the cornstarch powder before the full curing process is complete. Each mat is dusted with fine cornstarch to keep the newly painted vinyl surfaces from sticking together when first rolled.
  • Do not use flammable heaters or similar devices in the room while the mat is curing.
The curing steps

Step 1 — Unroll and expose the top side for one week

Unroll the mat. The top side — the side facing up after unrolling — must be exposed to air at room temperature for no less than one full week (7 -10 days).

Step 2 — Flip and expose the bottom side for one week

After the mat has lain unrolled for one full week, flip it and expose the bottom side to air for one week (7-10  days).

Step 3 — Clean the mat

After two full weeks of curing, the mat is ready for its first cleaning. See Cleaning Your Classic Mat for the First Time After Curing.

Timing rules

Total curing time must equal 14 full days before the mat can be used — 7 days on the top side and 7 days on the bottom side.

Curing may be done during non-school or non-business hours, such as evenings and weekends, provided the total accumulated time still equals one full week per side.

Plan the calendar backward. Because curing requires 14 full days and must begin within 21 days of receipt, schedule the start date as early as possible. 

Do not leave a new mat rolled

Do not leave a new, uncured mat rolled for an extended period of time. Doing so increases permanent wrinkling and may cause the mat surfaces to permanently bond together. Failure to follow all curing instructions will void your warranty.

Reconditioned mats also require curing

Mats returned from factory reconditioning receive a new vinyl coating and will require extra curing time before use.
