Don't unroll your new Resilite Classic Mat until it's been at 60°F for 24 hours. Delivery checks, floor prep, and the 48-hour freight damage rule. Tags: classic mat, delivery, freight damage, bill of lading, unrolling, temperature
Do not unroll the mat yet
Before anything else: do not unroll your mat until it has been kept at a room temperature of 60°F or higher for no less than 24 hours.
Forcing a cold mat to unroll will permanently damage the foam and the vinyl coating. This is not a recommendation — it is a condition of your warranty.
Protect the floor before you unroll
Some flooring contains chemicals that react with a new or newly reconditioned mat, damaging the floor, the mat, or both.
Never unroll a new (uncured) mat directly onto:
- Newly laid tile
- Freshly painted or varnished flooring
- Synthetic rubberized flooring
- New uncured concrete
- New uncured waxed gymnasium floors
Instead, unroll the mat on polyethylene (plastic) sheeting, available at most hardware, building supply, or home-improvement centers. Lay the plastic with as few wrinkles as possible — wrinkles will press permanent impressions into the mat, and those impressions are not covered by the warranty.
Inspect for shipping damage — the 48-hour rule
Inspect your mat carefully at the time of delivery for any damage that occurred in transit. Depending on the temperature, it is important to complete this inspection within 48 hours of receipt.
If the mat is undamaged: sign the Bill of Lading.
If damage is evident when you take possession: the Bill of Lading must be marked "DAMAGED - Subject to Inspection." Within 48 hours of receipt, the damage must also be reported in writing to Resilite or to the delivering freight company.
Signing a clean Bill of Lading is Resilite's receipt that the shipment arrived complete and in good condition. It is the customer's responsibility to check the number of pieces received against the number shown on the freight bill and the bill of lading, and to note any shortage or damage on the freight bill before it is signed.
What comes with the mat — keep all of it
Your shipment includes mat storage tubes, mat straps, and a Mat Repair Kit. Do not throw any of these away. The tubes and straps are required for correct storage, and failure to use them can damage the mat in ways that are not covered under warranty.
Store the Mat Repair Kit at room temperature, in a safe location away from heat, sparks, or flames.
About the odor
A new mat gives off a characteristic odor during the initial curing process. The odor diminishes as curing progresses. Anyone especially sensitive to it should avoid being in the area of the mat while it cures.
A note on handcrafted mats
Every Resilite mat is handcrafted rather than machine-produced. Handcrafted mats may display minor cosmetic flaws inherent to the manufacturing process. These slight imperfections do not compromise the integrity or functionality of the mat.
Next step
Your mat must be cured before it is used for any purpose. See The Curing Process: Preparing Your Classic Mat for First Use.
