Maintenance and Cleaning of Carpet Bonded Foam

Proper maintenance of Carpet Bonded Foam (CBF) surfaces ensures safety, hygiene, and durability. This guide provides detailed cleaning and care instructions for cheerleading and gymnastics facilities.

1. Preventing Dirt and Debris

Key Practices:

  • Minimize Tracking:
    • Place doormat-style mats around the cheer floor. Encourage participants to wipe their feet before stepping onto the surface.
    • Prohibit the use of street shoes on the cheer surface. Cheer shoes worn outdoors should also be avoided. Assign shoes exclusively for use on the floor.

2. Regular Cleaning: Hot Water Extraction

Recommended Process:

  • Steam Cleaning: Use hot water extraction to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the surface. Avoid using soap, as residual soap attracts dirt and can make the surface sticky.
  • Water Usage:
    • Carpet foam backing does not absorb water, unlike traditional home or office carpet padding.
    • Use additional water cautiously, as it may seep through seams to the floor below.
  • Drying:
    • Vacuum excess water from the carpet and use fans to dry the surface quickly.
    • Inspect the gym floor under the rolls to ensure it remains dry. Roll up and inspect mats as necessary.

Pro Tip: Ensure all equipment used is compatible with foam-backed carpet to avoid damage.

3. Sanitizing the Surface

Effective Sanitization Steps:

  • Consult your athletic department for recommended sanitizing agents, often used in training rooms.
  • Use a 10:1 bleach-to-water solution for effective germ control.
    • This solution is safe for the carpet but may discolor Velcro. Remove Velcro tape before cleaning.
    • Combine bleach cleaning with hot water extraction for thorough results. Perform extra rinsing to remove the bleach odor.
  • Caution: Bleach can damage clothing on contact. Wear protective gear.
