Cleaning Your Classic Mat for the First Time After Curing
Only after the full 14-day curing process is complete. Do not clean an uncured mat.
Each mat is dusted with a fine cornstarch powder to prevent the vinyl surfaces from sticking together while rolled. That powder comes off during this first cleaning.
Step 1 — Remove the white powder dryDo not use water at this stage.
Use a soft-bristled broom, a Swiffer®, a dry mop, or a Shop-Vac® to gently remove as much loose cornstarch and dirt as possible.
Step 2 — Wash with a mild soap detergentShop-Vac® note: Attach the wide floor attachment and place masking tape over any rough or sharp edges on the attachment. This prevents damage to the new vinyl mat surface.
Once as much dry powder as possible has been removed, use a mop or soft cloth to wet the mat with a mixture of warm water and a mild soap detergent.
Ratio for most detergents: 1 oz. (2 tablespoons) of detergent per 1 gallon of water.
Do not allow water to seep underneath the mat or to puddle on the mat.
Step 3 — Remove the cleaning solutionUse a Shop-Vac®, mop, or soft cloths to remove excess cleaning solution from the mat surface.
Step 4 — RinseAfter removing all cleaning solution, use clean water and a clean mop, sponge, or soft cloth to remove any leftover residue. Change the water often.
Step 5 — DisinfectUse a clean, freshly laundered mop with the proper ratio of disinfectant to water. Resilite recommends KenClean Plus, available from Resilite.
- Too little disinfectant will not disinfect the mat.
- Too much product is wasteful, can make the mat slippery, and causes the mat to retain more dirt.
- Most disinfectants require the surface to remain wet with the solution for 10 minutes to give the product time to kill effectively.
Always read the label of your disinfectant and follow the manufacturer's directions.
Step 6 — Remove excess solutionUse a Shop-Vac®, clean dry mop, or soft cloths to remove excess cleaning solution from the mat surface.
Step 7 — Dry fully, then repeat on the other sideAllow the mat to FULLY DRY. A fan will shorten drying time. Full drying minimizes mildew formation.
Then flip the mat and repeat every step of the cleaning process on the other side.
